Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante reportedly faints after training session

N’Golo Kante missed out on Chelsea’s visit to Manchester City on Sunday after fainting at the club’s training ground on Friday, according to reports.

Kante, 26, reportedly passed out after a training session at Cobham and subsequently undertook cardiology tests. The former Leicester City player felt unwell on Sunday morning despite being initially cleared to play and was left out of Antonio Conte’s squad.

As first reported by The Telegraph, the French midfielder was attended to by team doctors seconds after slumping over in the dressing room; after the incident he regained consciousness and was sent to a specialist who found no heart problems.

The incident is thought to have greatly alarmed Kanté’s Chelsea team-mates at the time, and was brought into sharp relief by the news of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori’s sudden death on Sunday.

The initial autopsy has revealed that Astori most likely suffered bradyarrhythmia — meaning his heartbeat got slower and slower until it stopped — while he was sleeping from Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Italian authorities also confirmed that there will be further investigations into Astori’s passing with the results expected in 60 days.

Astori had played for Conte and several of his backroom staff with the Italian national team, and the Chelsea manager was visibly emotional in paying tribute to the defender before the 1-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Kante has reportedly been given a clean bill of health by Chelsea to play, and is available to feature against Crystal Palace on Saturday, and in the Champions League second-leg tie against FC Barcelona next week.

Serie A games postponed as Italy mourns Fiorentina’s Davide Astori

Lega Serie A has postponed all weekend fixtures, including the Milan city derby on Sunday evening, in mourning of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori.

“Shocked by this tragic news, all of the family of the Lega Serie A warmly unites around the family of Davide Astori and Fiorentina,” a statement from the league on Sunday read. “All of today’s games are postponed due to mourning. Ciao Davide.”

Fiorentina captain and Italy international Davide Astori has died at the age of 31.

His club confirmed the news on Sunday morning in a statement posted on the club’s official website, with multiple outlets in Italy reporting the defender died of cardiac arrest in his hotel room before the game against Udinese.

“The belief is that the player died of a cardiac arrest by natural causes,” Udine prosecutor Antonio De Nicolo said. “It is strange that such a thing should happen to a professional who is so closely monitored without there being any warning signs.”

“A profoundly shocked Fiorentina are compelled to announce that their captain Davide Astori, who was struck by an unexpected sudden illness, has passed away,” the team said in a statement. “In this terrible and delicate situation, and in particular out of respect for his family, we appeal for everybody to show sensitivity.”

Genoa’s game with Cagliari, which was due to kick off at 12:30 p.m. local time, was postponed when the players were informed of the news during their warm-up routines.

Afterwards, an announcement was made at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris explaining the postponement, and fans applauded as a picture of Astori appeared on the big screens inside the stadium.

Torino subsequently announced that their fixture with Crotone before Lega Serie A eventually announced that all fixtures on the day will be postponed.
